Mastery Book Review - Robert Greene

Mastery Book Review - Robert Greene

Mastery by Robert Greene centres around the topic of how various masters throughout history, came to discover their lives major purpose and the steps they took to push the limits of what was thought possible at the time, some even revolutionising the industry they operated in and how we, in a modern world, can do the same.

The book starts by clearly defining the true meaning of Mastery and why we admire those who display such Mastery in their chosen task.

After we have understood what Mastery means, Robert Greene takes us on a journey of self-discovery. The reader is challenged to recall moments in their past where they orientated themselves toward interests and hobbies that aligned with their natural inclinations. He refers to this inclination as an inner force which as we grow older, becomes dim and worn out as the influence of parents, friends and colleagues, take our attention away from what we really want to do, and focuses it on the needs and demands of the world and our every-day lives. Causing many to live a life unfulfilled and far removed from their inner guiding voice.

Once your inner guiding voice is re-discovered, your actions aligned with your major purpose, and the initial steps taken to enter your new found vocation. Robert discusses the idea of the ideal apprenticeship, drawing on knowledge of old and the origins of a traditional apprenticeship. We are given practical knowledge on how to immerse ourselves in this new field, as well as mental tools and frameworks to navigate the chaos.

We are then encouraged to find a mentor, one which has achieved Mastery already and fully absorb their knowledge, always with the goal of eventually surpassing them, ruthlessly carving our own path and cementing our own legacy.

Mastery also dives deep on social intelligence, the different phases of mind you must pass through on your way to achieving master status, finally, fusing your intuitive powers with rational thought to achieve the greatest pleasure our soul desires, Mastery.
